Sleeping on the Job: What I have been doing for the last 18 months

Some people are having problems with the links.  They work for me.  Here they are.  The announcement is http://www.prweb.com/pdfdownload/12315891.pdf

The web site is http://www.sommetrics.com

About 18 months ago, I started on a surprising adventure.  I thought I was basically done with business, although I was still very much in love with technology.  Now I am working harder than I have in the last ten years helping to create a company that I believe will dramatically improve the quality of sleep or many people.  Today we announced  our new name and our new  web site (wwww.sommetrics.com).  There were three major reasons that I got so involved – it was a rare opportunity for me to help people, have a lot of fun and hopefully make a lot of money for investors.

Helping people

About 10% of adults  have Obstructive Sleep Apnea which is a very serious medical condition.  About 25% of adults suffer, or better said, their bed mates suffer, from habitual  snoring.  More than 30% of adults that sleep 7-9 hours a day, do not feel rested when they wake and complain of daytime sleepiness.  Much of this is the result of complete or partial obstruction of the upper airway during sleep.  We call these conditions Obstructive Sleep Effect [OSE].

While there are many companies that have products which are capable of monitoring sleep, they are limited to giving advice as to how to improve sleep. Often such advice is to keep the room dark, turn off electronics (even those most of these products require a Smart Phone to be running), and perhaps stop drinking.  Sommetrics, has developed a proprietary method of opening up the airway during sleep in a non-invasive manner.  The core technology is cNEP™ which stands for Continuous Negative External Pressure.

Sommetrics is still in the process of developing its products and is engaged in a process to get FDA approval.  If all goes according to plan, the company should be able to offer products towards the end of 2015.

Having Fun

I am getting to use all the experience I have gotten since I started doing research in neurophysiology in 1996 at the Langley Porter Institute, UCSF Medical School.  Most of you will not know that I had my first career in medical science.  In 1969, I transitioned from brains to hearts and lungs.  My field of expertise was real time  processing of physiological signals.  I actually end up as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University when I was 29 years old.  But then in 1979, I left the medical field to join the engineering dept at Digital Equipment Corp. and eventually ended up at Vice President of Business Development  at Intel Corp where I Co-founded Intel Capital.

The company, under the leadership of the CEO, Richard Rose, MD  has some very talented and amazing employees and advisors.  I get to interact with some outstanding Sleep Scientist.  The development work spans material sciences, pumps, electronics and software.  At lot of the signal processing which is done with micro electronics reminds me of the days when I had to code in machine language to get my software to work in 16k bytes of memory.

Making a lot of money

When I first met the company, it was running on fumes.  I financed it myself for a while (something I never do) and then raised significant money for the company.  Many of the investors are my friends and even family, so I am committed to seeing that they get an outstanding  return.  As one of the largest shareholders myself, I would not mind that either.

I will certainly write a lot more about the company in the future.  In the meantime, if you are interested in learning more and/or eventually participating in studies, please go to the web site.

  1. Avram – you might want to check and fix the links to the site you are trying to point you they are not working at the moment. Other than that, congrats.

  2. Thanks everyone who has written me about the broken links. I am not sure what is going on. They work for me and others. I wonder if you are going to this site via the Facebook browser. That might be the reasons. It takes a very long time before the links work.

  3. The link in the last line still not working, though the ones at the top of the article are OK.
