Israel / Palestine

If you want to help Palestine, do something that matters.

I guess I need to start by saying that while I am a supporter of Israel, I am not a supporter of its current government and in particular how it has conducted itself in Gaza.

I must also say that Hamas and its supporters are aberrant.  They are both religious fanatics but also scum.  How women and gay people can support them is not comprehensible.  Hamas are killers of babies, rapists and torturers of their captives. They have given ups any right to be alive.

All around the world there are millions of people coming out in support of Palestinians and in particular the people of Gaza while ignoring the plights of so many others

  • Russian invasion of Ukraine
  • Sudanese civil war (2023–present)
  • Conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo / DRC–Rwanda tensions
  • Myanmar internal conflict / civil war
  • Uyghurs

Just to name a few.

I think the explanation is two fold.  First, this is a conflict between a very successful and powerful first world country, Israel, thought is consider to be “white” against a group of people that are are considered to be non-white and are definitely 3rd world.  Where the Russian/Ukraine war is between two white 1st world countries and the others are between third world countries.

The second reasons is that Hamas has been very effective in using media especially social media.  How did this skill come about.  I think it was developed by the Iranians who were the backers of Hamas and have very skilled people.  Social media is the critical thing here.

I think if the only thing I understood about what was going on came from social media, I would be out in the streets as well.

Does anti semitism play a role.  I think it does but not the primary role for most.  I do think it plays a role for the muslim protestors because so many of them are anti everything but Islam.  The especially are against the Jews for “occupying” Palestine even though must Arab nations do not seem very interested in Palestinians.

But what continues to bother me is that while protests are cheap and often enjoyable (I have witness the fun you people are having here in Italy where I live, cutting classes to protest), doing something that really helps takes effort.

In the 60s, I was a protestor.  I was involved in both the civil rights movement and later the anti war movement.  While I protested and even went to jail, that was just one part of my engagement.  I also spent a summer tutoring back kids so they could go to college.

Over the years, I have tried to help Palestinians both financially and as a mentor.

Now we see many countries in the world recognizing Palestine as a country. The is a hollow feel good action.  It will not do much to help the people living there.  Rather or in addition, they should send people to help with strengthening the government, provide expertise to help build the economy, teachers to help build the talent for a sustainable country.  They do little or none of this especially the rich Arab nations.

If you want to help Palestine, do something that matters.

  1. I agree that social media plays a crucial role. However, it’s also important to consider who has influence over the major platforms. Many observers have argued that Israel holds significant sway in shaping certain narratives and influencing content moderation. What we are seeing now seems to align with that concern.
